If you achieve the Presidency, you are a "great" man (not necessarily a good one). Had GHWB never taken an oath of national political office, he was already a great man.
WWII pilot, shot down over the Pacific, Head of RNC, Ambassador, Head of CIA, raised children respected by millions. Well done, sir. |
Touching ceremony today.
Pity they didn't lock the doors before Trump showed up. |

I certainly held strongly felt disagreements with GHWB but not once did I feel he wished our country harm. He was the epitome of a country club Republican, a scion of bluenosed Connecticut Yankees but never a traitor. A Yaley and a Skull and Bones member but never a coward and traitor. I wish I could say the same about the capering orange nouveau riche obscenity who's currently squatting in the White House but... |
The WW2 generation has, alas, passed. Rest in Peace, Daddy Bush.
This is a very sad thing because look what has the helm now; The epitome of the Hedonistic, spoiled brat, trust fund sapping Baby Boomer. God help us. |
OK...so I grimaced through the ceremonies, and waited. Long enough now...
While RWNJ Jennifer Rubin (who gives a shit if she disapproves of trump) tries to turn GHWB into the baby jesus on "MSNBC All In" the other night... The Ignored Legacy of George H.W. Bush If I were Charles Pierce I would never go on that fucking nerd's show again. Pierce was trying to make all the points in the above article plus some and Rubin refused to STFU and let him speak as he did when she was spouting off. And Chris Hayes refused to intervene. |
Both canonizing and demonizing are inherently dumb.
That said, all of the article's missives do paint a picture. The picture is a man who -- on the whole -- spent his life generating significantly more positives than negatives even if every word is accurate. I'd say that's the best any of us can hope for. |
