I think some of them might finally be getting it into their thick heads that they'll never get votes from guntoting cornpones like my brother until they back off the whole gun thing. Which, I have never, and still don't understand because the closest we've ever come to serious gun control was the Brady Bill, proposed by the Reagan Administration.

Another fine example of Republicans making a proposal and Democrats taking the heat for it.

The real reason Dems are backing away from the issue is that the Right has been phenomenally successful in characterizing gun control efforts as gun confiscation efforts. Save for a very, very few, largely outside the political "class" it was never about that but the issue has been so demagogued that you can't convince anyone of that.
